Irish Dictionaries Online

One resource I regularly use is the excellent Irish Dictionary Online which allows you to quickly and easily translate from Irish to English or vice versa. Yes there are a number of other sites available but this one concentrates on keeping it simple ( as long as you ignore the google adverts ).

Take a look and see what you think.

Update: Doh, thanks to Sonia for pointing out that I had linked to Wikipedia above, should be fixed now and pointing to the dictionary itself.

While Irish is the official and native language of Ireland it is, unfortunatly, not as widely spoken as people expect. In reality English is the default language spoken and used by almost the entire country.

The short film below shows this while acting as a fun way to learn your first few Irish phrases. The title “Yu Ming is Ainm Dom” translates to Yu Ming is My Name and the film tells the tale of a bored Chinese shopkeep who learns Gaelic and moves to Dublin only to find the locals no longer speak their mother tongue. Follow Yu Ming as he pursues his dream of life in the Celtic world.
